An Asymptotic Preserving scheme for the Euler equations in a strong magnetic field

چکیده
This paper is concerned with the numerical approximation of the isothermal Euler equations for charged particles subject to the Lorentz force (the ’Euler-Lorentz’ system). When the magnetic field is large, or equivalently, when the parameter ε representing the non-dimensional ion cyclotron frequency tends to zero, the so-called drift-fluid (or gyrofluid) approximation is obtained. In this limit, the parallel motion relative to the magnetic field direction splits from perpendicular motion and is given implicitly by the constraint of zero total force along the magnetic field lines. In this paper, we provide a well-posed elliptic equation for the parallel velocity which in turn allows us to construct an Asymptotic-Preserving (AP) scheme for the Euler-Lorentz system. This scheme gives rise to both a consistent approximation of the EulerLorentz model when ε is finite and a consistent approximation of the drift limit when ε → 0. Above all, it does not require any constraint on the space and time steps related to the small value of ε. Numerical results are presented, which confirm the AP character of the scheme and its Asymptotic Stability.

An Asymptotic-Preserving all-speed scheme for the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations
We present an Asymptotic-Preserving ’all-speed’ scheme for the simulation of compressible flows valid at all Mach-numbers ranging from very small to order unity. The scheme is based on a semi-implicit discretization which treats the acoustic part implicitly and the convective and diffusive parts explicitly. This discretization, which is the key to the Asymptotic-Preserving property, provides a ...
متن کاملA New Implicit Dissipation Term for Solving 3D Euler Equations on Unstructured Grids by GMRES+LU-SGS Scheme
Due to improvements in computational resources, interest has recently increased in using implicit scheme for solving flow equations on 3D unstructured grids. However, most of the implicit schemes produce greater numerical diffusion error than their corresponding explicit schemes. This stems from the fact that in linearizing implicit fluxes, it is conventional to replace the Jacobian matrix in t...
متن کاملModeling of the beam discontinuity with two analyses in strong and weak forms using a torsional spring model
In this paper, a discontinuity in beams whose intensity is adjusted by the spring stiffness factor is modeled using a torsional spring. Adapting two analyses in strong and weak forms for discontinuous beams, the improved governing differential equations and the modified stiffness matrix are derived respectively. In the strong form, two different solution methods have been presented to make an a...

متن کاملA Composite Finite Difference Scheme for Subsonic Transonic Flows (RESEARCH NOTE).
This paper presents a simple and computationally-efficient algorithm for solving steady two-dimensional subsonic and transonic compressible flow over an airfoil. This work uses an interactive viscous-inviscid solution by incorporating the viscous effects in a thin shear-layer. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a parabolic set of coupled, non-linear partial diff...
